Why you are slower after lunch
It happens whether or not you eat, which is the clue to what it actually is.
Most people are measurably worse at demanding work in the early afternoon. Take the reaction test at 10am and again at 2pm across a fortnight and the difference is usually large enough to see in your own history.
The common explanation — a heavy lunch — is mostly wrong.
The clue is that it happens without lunch
The dip appears in people who have not eaten. It appears in people on continuous feeding regimes. It appears in laboratory protocols specifically designed to remove meals as a variable.
That rules out digestion as the cause, and points at the thing that remains: your body clock has two low points in a 24-hour cycle, not one. The deep one is in the small hours. The shallow one falls roughly twelve hours later — early afternoon for most people.
Food is not irrelevant. A large, carbohydrate-heavy lunch makes an existing dip worse, and alcohol at lunchtime makes it considerably worse. But it deepens a trough that was going to be there anyway.
What actually declines
Not everything, and the pattern is worth knowing because it tells you what to move.
Sustained attention suffers most. Tasks requiring you to stay alert without much happening — proofreading, monitoring, anything with a low rate of interesting events — are where the dip bites hardest.
Reaction and vigilance follow. This is the one you can see on this site. Expect your median to be slower and, more tellingly, your slowest rounds to be noticeably worse. Tiredness shows up as occasional lapses before it shows up as a uniformly slower average.
Well-practised motor skills hold up. Typing speed is comparatively resilient, because a fluent motor sequence runs with little executive involvement. Accuracy usually goes before speed does.
Some things arguably improve. There is a modest literature suggesting that tasks benefiting from loose, associative thinking can go better at your low point, because you are less able to suppress tangential ideas. The effect is small and the studies are mixed, but it fits the common experience that unfocused hours are not useless hours — they are useless for a particular kind of work.
Why the timing varies between people
Chronotype. The dip tracks your own clock, not the wall clock.
A genuine morning type may hit it around 1pm and be recovering by 3. A genuine evening type may not hit it until 4pm, and may have been at their worst all morning. Most people are somewhere between, and the range across a population is wider than the average suggests — several hours.
Your own history is the only reliable guide. Two weeks of taking the same test at two fixed times will locate your dip more precisely than any general figure, and the answer is worth having because it determines what you should be doing when.
What helps, in order of evidence
Sleep, by an enormous margin. The dip is much shallower in a well-rested person and severe in a short-slept one. Most people describing a crippling afternoon slump are describing sleep debt with a circadian trough on top.
A short nap. Ten to twenty minutes is well supported and is the reason the siesta exists in cultures with hot afternoons. Keep it short: past about thirty minutes you risk waking out of deep sleep into sleep inertia, which is a period of markedly worse performance for half an hour afterwards. If you nap before something that matters, allow for that.
Daylight. Bright light suppresses the dip somewhat, which is part of why a walk outside works better than a coffee at your desk.
Movement. Even a few minutes. The effect is modest, reliable, and free.

What to do with the knowledge
The useful move is not to fight the dip but to schedule around it, and this is the single highest-return change most people can make to a working day.
Put the work that needs judgement, concentration or original thinking in your best hours. Put the mechanical work — formatting, admin, email, filing, tidying references — in the trough. Most people do the opposite by default, clearing small tasks in the morning when they are sharp and attempting hard work in the afternoon when they are not.

Two clocks, not one
The dip is easier to understand as the product of two systems running at once, which is the standard model in sleep research.
The circadian rhythm is a roughly 24-hour oscillation driven by an internal clock and set by light. It pushes alertness up and down on a fixed cycle regardless of what you have been doing.
Sleep pressure builds steadily from the moment you wake — the adenosine described in the caffeine guide — and is only cleared by sleeping.
Through the morning, rising circadian alertness outruns accumulating sleep pressure and you feel good. In the early afternoon the circadian curve dips while pressure keeps climbing, and the two briefly work against you at once. Later the circadian signal rises again — the reason many people get a second wind in the early evening despite having been awake far longer.
That model explains the two things that puzzle people about the dip: why it arrives at roughly the same hour whatever you ate, and why it lifts on its own without you doing anything.
The one time it is genuinely dangerous
Worth stating plainly, because it is the only part of this page with real stakes.
The circadian dip is a well-documented factor in road traffic incidents. Crash statistics show a clear secondary peak in the early afternoon, on top of the much larger overnight one, and it is the same mechanism — a trough in alertness rather than a shortage of sleep.
The specific hazard is monotonous driving: motorways, familiar routes, nothing happening. That is a vigilance task, which is precisely the category the dip damages most.
If you are driving a long distance in the early afternoon and feel the pull, the evidence supports one thing: stop. A twenty-minute nap in a lay-by, plus caffeine taken before it so it takes effect as you wake, is the intervention with the best support behind it. Opening a window and turning the radio up is not.
Why the dip is worse in some jobs than others
The trough is a fixed feature of your clock. How much it costs you depends on what you are asked to do during it, which is why some people insist they have no afternoon slump and others find it disabling.
Work with continuous feedback masks it. A conversation, a meeting, a problem set where each step tells you whether you were right — these supply arousal from outside and carry you through. This is why people often feel fine in an afternoon of meetings and terrible in an afternoon of reading.
Work with no feedback exposes it. Proofreading, reviewing, checking. You get no signal that attention has lapsed, which is exactly when it does.
Shift work is the hard case. A schedule that puts demanding work in a permanent trough cannot be fixed by any of the advice above, and the literature on shift work and error rates is not reassuring. Measuring your own

Two cautions when reading it. Take the tests at the same time of day if you want to compare across days, and at two fixed times if you want to find your dip — mixing both questions in one dataset answers neither. And ignore your first several sessions: early improvement is you learning the task, not you getting sharper.
